Jobs

Based at La Trobe University, Rabelais operates as a fully functioning newspaper covering events of interest to both students studying at La Trobe and universities across Melbourne.  It is a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to fulfil two main goals, to deliver news to Bundoora students and across the northern suburbs of Melbourne and secondly, to offer students an opportunity to develop their professional writing skills.  As such Rabelais seeks contributions in the form of news articles, opinion and feature writing, reviews of concerts, theatre, films and books, coverage of university sport and culture.

Rabelais publishes these contributions on two platforms, a monthly newspaper, distributed for free to La Trobe students on campus and also available as a street press to local bars, cafes and retails outlets across the northern and central Melbourne suburbs, as well as in our online newspaper, Rabelais.org.au.

Anyone interested should feel welcome to drop into the Rabelais Office, in the Student Representative Council building, on the second floor of the Agora, behind Campus Café or send the editor and email as editors@rabelais.org.au

Current Job Vacancies

Journalists/Reporters

Rabelais is constantly seeking fresh talent to add to the organisation.  Students are invited to contribute articles at anytime of the year, in a free lance capacity, researching, conducting interviews and chasing stories that they feel are newsworthy and important to our target demographic, the 18-30 year old living on the north side of the Yarra.  All La Trobe students are welcome to contribute regardless of their course, level of study or professional development.  A first year bio-science student is as welcome as a Master of Global Communication.

Alternatively, students wishing to have a greater role in reporting, may, through consultation with the Chief Editor, be assigned specific rounds, such as sport, politics, law and court reporting, science and education, building reliable contacts throughout the university and the wider community, following events and reporting on their development.  This particular role requires a higher level of commitment and may be better suited to students interested in pursuing a career in the media.  Any student who is assigned a round and maintains their commitment throughout the year will receive a Letter of Recommendation from the Chief Editor to accompany their C.V.

News Editor

The position of News Editor is tasked with tracking events and news items to which journalists will be assigned to cover, assisting with research and editing/proof reading submissions.  A successful applicant must have a keen eye for detail, sound knowledge of events of interest to our target demographic and passion for news as well as experience using publishing and editing software such as Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign.   Expressions of interest should be sent to editors@rabelais.org.au

Photography Editor

The Photography Editor is responsible for collating film and still imagery to be used in both the print and online versions of the newspaper.  Photography has always been an important aspect of journalism as it helps draw readers into an article while at the same time helping to establish the wider context of the article with an immediacy and appeal that the printed word struggles with.  As we continue to develop the online version of Rabelais this role will become increasingly important.  Rabelais photographers will routinely be sent to cover concerts, interviews, news and cultural events.

Rabelais already has access to cameras and editing software, applicants need only bring their attention to detail – and knowledge of Adobe Photoshop or Paintshop Pro.

Expressions of interest should be sent to editors@rabelais.org.au

Advertising Agents

As a functioning newspaper Rabelais relies on advertising revenue to fund our activities.  Rabelais advertising agents are tasked with contacting likely advertisers, promoting our website and shepherding advertisers from initial phone call through to signing contacts.   Advertising agents are paid in commission with progressive bonuses for multiple edition contacts.

Expressions of interest should be sent to editors@rabelais.org.au

Distribution Agents

Rabelais needs an army of distributers to hand out the thousands of papers we print each month, both on campus and off.  Distributers are paid per paper that and are only required to work 2-3 days a month.  These positions are open any student and are ideal for someone looking for quick cash.
